Hands to serve God’s servants

News about Oma

Please continue to pray with us for OMA (Evelyn Snell) who is doing quite well considering her age.

She fell Thursday the 7th of August 2014 and broke her upper right arm resulting in the need for 24/7 care by Sandy, Randy, Steve and some friends from Strijen.

Oma and her late husband founded Hands To Serve in the Netherlands.

You will find more details in the updates below:

100 years old & an important visitor

A special thank you from Oma (Evelyn) for all the cards and flowers that she received for her 100th birthday. Truly this was a real special occasion in her life and she was blessed to celebrate with family and friends. The Mayor of Strijen even came to visit her with a bouquet of flowers.

Happy Birthday Oma!

OMA_6921Oma is 99!!!  Thank you for your cards, e-mails, and phone calls and visit. She got a real smile on her face when the team members who were here that day (16 of us) sang Happy Birthday to her. The next day, she was very very tired, but at 99, I think that I would be tired too. Please continue to pray for her and for those who care for her.

Oma is doing reasonably OK

20150731_122224
Almost a year after her fall she has recovered enough to (slowly) walk to have lunch at the mission. This meal gives her a 50 meter walk and a good reason to get out of her house. After lunch she often goes for a slightly longer walk (100 meter) through the mission or down the road. But always with someone next to her to catch her if she would fall. She now needs 24/7 care. Besides the people close to her and some friends from Strijen also the government provides some daily helpers/nurses to give her some extra support.

Unfortunately Oma (Evelyn) took a fall in the night. She hurt her head and had a cut just above her right eye. She needed to go to the doctor this morning and got four stitches in it. She is okay, and does not have a headache. Please pray for her health!

Dear ones in HIM,

We just got back from the hospital and the doctor gave OMA additional exercises to do and asked her to come back on the 1st of October.  The doctor showed us the x-ray of her arm and she has a long steel pin in the arm, with six screws in it. The hospital was very busy today but it was once again a good experience. I could hear people complaining about the wait but as I said to Sandy “We have a hospital with good care and I am thankful for the privileges that we enjoy here”.

When you look at OMA’s picture you will see that we have finally got her to use a computer!!!

Even if it is only for a foot stool!

Thanks for all of your prayers for all of us.

Steve and Sandy.

Oma weer thuis - Oma back home

Oma is home and Randy, Sandy and I have our hands full. At this moment some one needs to be with her 24 hours a day. She is doing great and we are trying to get her to drink more as this is one of things that has been causing the problems. She developed a bladder infection, which has been causing many of the problems that we have been observing.

We are thrilled to have her home even if it a great deal of work for us. She has a lot of medicines that she needs to take each day and we have made a chart on the computer so we can keep up with it all. We have also made a chart as to when and how much she is drinking.

Bezoek aan het ziekenhuis - Visit to the hospital

Thursday, Aug 14, 2014 9:26 PM GMT+1

We just got back from the hospital and OMA is doing well. The operation seems to be a success. She will have an X-ray tomorrow to check it. She was clearly all there and in rest. She sends her greetings to everyone and we are thrilled.

Operatie goed verlopen - Operation was a success

Thu, 14 Aug 2014 09:35:43 GMT+1

Just a short update to let you all know that Oma has come through the operation OKAY!!  They said that she is dozy. Steve took a phone call from the hospital about a half hour ago. More information we don’t have, but we are planning to visit her tonight. Please continue to pray.

De operatie is morgen - Tomorrow they will operate

13 augustus 2014 09:53:45 GMT+01

We have just talked to the hospital and they are going to operate on her arm tomorrow morning (Thursday) at 8.30 am. We have just helped the sister on the ward fill in a form about all of OMA’s previous visits to hospitals and any complications. As we went through the list we began to realize just how fit OMA has been for most of her life. Also, the sister said that OMA does NOT have a thrombosis in her leg for which we praise the Lord. We continue to pray that we will receive her back with us here in good order.

Bij oma op bezoek - A visit to Oma

Yesterday evening (Tuesday) we went to visit OMA. When we arrived at the hospital we found OMA sleeping and not just a light sleep but really out. We tried to wake her but we got no response. She just kept breathing and laid in the bed. The physiotherapist had also not been able to get  her to do any exercises I was told. As I thought about it I came to the conclusion that the morphine had keep her active and awake since she had broken her arm. She was now making up for lost sleep time. It was a relief to see her so relaxed. After a while she woke up a little and when we asked what she had to eat that day she came with the correct answer. We left the hospital relieved and rejoicing.

Oma is sleeping a lot

Tuesday, August 12, 2014 evening

While in hospital they have taken Oma off the morphine and given her different pain medication. This has given her much more restfulness and a chance to catch up with lost sleep from the last several days.

She is doing a lot better and they are still planning to go ahead with the operation this Thursday, because it is important to operate on the broken arm as soon as her body allows for it.

Oma now in hospital

Tuesday, August 12, 2014 4:59 PM

We are writing to ask everyone to continue to pray with us for OMA (Evelyn Snell) who in now in the hospital in Dordrecht. She fell last Thursday and broke her upper right arm.

The hospital planed an operation for the 14th of August and sent her home with instructions to give her a morphine pill in the morning and evening as and when it was needed. It was clear that she needed the pain killers and so we treated her accordingly. The result is that she became very confused and needed 24 hour care. We tried this but at a certain point we had to have sleep and while we were sleeping she got out of bed and fell again. This resulted in the right arm becoming more bruised and painful.

We called the doctor and he sent us back to the hospital. They admitted her yesterday evening (Monday) and are trying to find the reason that she falls now and again. She is quite confused at the moment due to the morphine that they are giving her as a pain killer.

One of the doctors came to the conclusion that she could have a blood clot in her right leg. We  are trusting that by our Lord’s Grace they will work this out.

We are praying for the nurses and doctors as they try and treat OMA. She is not the easiest patient as she was a nurse and is trying to tell them what to do!!!

In Him,  Steve and Sandy

Oma fell and broke her arm

Thursday, August 07, 2014 5:05 PM

Dear All,

Just to let you know so that you can pray for OMA and the rest of us. Oma fell this morning when she was getting out of bed. How it happened, she is not sure. Steve took her to the Doctor and then on to the hospital. The outcome is that she has broken her right arm just below her shoulder. Tomorrow (Friday), Steve will take her for her Pré-operatieve screening and then an operation is planned on Thursday, 14 August. The operation is so that they can put a pin in to hold the two pieces of bone together. We do not have a time for this yet and will not get that until the day before. At this moment, they say that she will only have to stay in the hospital one night.
